A common laser scanning misconception we hear is the laser scanner takes measurements and produces some sort of 3D CAD model, all in one step. What actually happens is LiDAR generates a point cloud from each scan (just what it sounds like, a cloud of points).

Point Clouds

Each cloud is made up of tens of millions of digital points in 3D space representing highly accurate measurements of scanned objects. These measured points look like a model or photograph from a distance. In the movie Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Cameron stares at George Seurat’s pointillism painting “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte.” From a distance, there is a recognizable image, but the closer Cameron looks, it becomes just a bunch of dots. Point clouds are like a pointillistic painting.

Scanning

Scanning on-site is just the first step we take to make your point cloud. Every scan captures millions of measurements using the LiDAR machine as the point of origin, but each scan is a self-contained data set. The data sets don’t know their relation to the other scans. The information is not located to any coordinate system or tied to a survey control, and individual scans are not related to another scan setup. If we gave you the data at this stage of the process, you could not step back and see the entire painting.

Registration

Registration ties everything together. This is where the magic happens! Registration establishes the relationship between each scan. If desired, we can tie the project scans to survey control. Our team ensures that your entire scan project is registered and complete. Once your point cloud is finished, it can be delivered to you in numerous file formats, depending on your needs.
